Physical Appearance:
Itachi is about five-nine and 130 pounds; small and light, for what he's been trained to his entire life. Strong, but not muscular; huge, bodybuilder-type muscles will only get in the way when trying to slip into a target's house for an assassination.

He is all Uchiha--thick black hair, tied in a neat ponytail that reaches partway down his back. Bangs frame an attractive, ivory-skinned face marred only by thin lines, evidence of the kinds of stresses that have been placed on his shoulders since he was old enough to walk. His eyes are dark and inscrutable, illuminated by genius; they are the kind of eyes that make those who have something to hide very uncomfortable. His hands are covered in callouses from years of weapons training and training, and his body is criss-crossed in scars gotten from battles and sparring accidents.

Personality and Traits:
Itachi is first and foremost a quiet man. Having been brought up as a shinobi, he has learned quickly that talking and listening are mutually exclusive, and has learned to be quiet, observe and listen--far more information is betrayed this way than through any interrogation. Being recognized as a genius at an early age, he has long been held at a distance from others; thus, he is far more aloof than most people. He can be something of a loner--but such is the price those who are gifted pay. In exchange for their superior intellect, they are isolated except from others like them.

But this is only a small part of the whole deal; Itachi has a strong will, the ability to make quick decisions, and loyalty to those he deems worthy, all prized traits in a leader. He cares deeply, if quietly, for his family (in particular his little brother, Sasuke). In short, while he might not seem like the most approachable person, there's a lot more going on under the surface that he doesn't let on, not out of malice but because he has no motive to and no desire to show anything potentially seen as weakness. He likes to keep to himself, but if he deems you worthy you may get conversation, or at least more than monosyllables.

Canon Background:
In understanding Itachi it is necessary to understand a few facts: that the Uchihas had been one of the groups to found Konoha, the Village Hidden in the Leaves; and that they had since fallen out of favor and into suspicion and been marginalized by the Hokage and Council members.

Itachi was born in the beginning of summer in Fire Country, before the sweltering humidity had fully set in. Nonetheless he caused his mother considerable discomfort before he finally made his appearance at dawn on June ninth, a serious baby with a serious stare. He cried little, and only from the shock of being born, it seemed. At first his parents worried he was mute, but he would whimper for things, and sometimes (once in a blue moon) made little happy noises, so they assumed he was just quiet.

It was within the first year of life that they began to realize he was quite a bit different. Itachi was beginning to speak much faster than the other children, picking up words and sometimes whole phrases by the time he was two. By three, he could speak clearly, if in a child's voice, and convey his wishes in an eloquent way that put him leaps and bounds ahead of the others. Pride drove his father to push Itachi hard, and at six the boy entered the shinobi academy, already well-advanced in the arts. He graduated in a year and awakened his Sharingan--the special eye ability of the Uchiha family--at age eight. By all accounts, Uchiha Itachi was a prodigy.

He was pushed ever harder by his father, Fugaku, who was head of the Uchiha Police Force. Wanting an 'in' to the upper echelons of Konoha governance, he pushed his son into entering the special operations forces of the village, ANBU. There were the elite shinobi of the village, given high-priority, high-danger assignments. They went hooded and masked, and among them, Itachi was the best. But he never lost sight of what was more important; in his own way, he looked after his younger brother, Sasuke, and paid him attention when his father would not, to the point of defiance. Itachi knew the importance of family more than most. The Uchiha had been cloistered in their district, kept under secret watch by the Council members operating under orders from the time of the second Hokage, and Fugaku had long been conspiring with the adult members of the family to stage a coup. Itachi was central to this plan, their agent within the government.

This presented Itachi with considerable dilemmas. He wanted to serve his family, but inside, he was peaceful, preferring not to fight. He disliked the martial life he'd been forced into. Moreover, he'd become a double agent--appearing to be the Uchiha's conduit of knowledge, but passing information about them to the Council, and at the last they had asked of him something he had never wanted to do. The Council, wanting to end the perceived Uchiha threat once and for all, had asked him to slaughter his entire family, down to the last child. The line would die with him.

Itachi became troubled, left ANBU for a time and buried himself in his clan's history. From his learning, he killed his best friend--Shisui, a cousin, whom Itachi had treated like a brother--and gained the fullest evolution of the Sharingan that any Uchiha could do on their own, the Mangekyou. It was a heavy price to pay, both in Shisui's life and in Itachi's, for the Mangekyou slowly sapped its user's life and sight. The only way to reverse this was to take the eyes of another who had awakened the Mangekyou as well and implant their eyes into one's own body. Madara had done it, with his brother's eyes. Itachi did not want to do it with his brother's.

This is a task that Itachi apparently struggled with for some time. Understandably so; being asked to murder one's own family merits thought and planning, if one is going to carry it out, and Itachi had been given no choice. It was during this time that he was approached by someone long thought dead; a distant relative, Uchiha Madara, the man who had once thought to lead the clan to mutiny against the first Hokage. He had been watching over his family from a distance, these many years, and contacted his young relative. It was Madara who eventually helped Itachi slay the clan.

Madara had his own reasons; Itachi had only one condition, and that was that Sasuke was to be left alive and unmolested by the Council. He would be told nothing at all. The third Hokage, being a sympathetic man who had never wanted this to happen in the first place, gave his word that it would be so. Itachi left the village for good that night, and as per an agreement he'd reached with Madara joined Akatsuki, a group of high-value criminals, wanted by every village and country from one side of the continent to the other.

He returned years later, in order to capture Uzumaki Naruto and take him back to extract the kyuubi from within him. Akatsuki's purposes did not entirely line up with his own, however. Itachi, seeing how dangerous Madara had become and that he was attempting to once more rise in power, began taking steps to make sure that Sasuke never got caught in the man's snares and used as he had been used. But Itachi was running out of time. His body was beginning to fail from prolonged use of the Mangekyou, and his eyesight with it. He and Sasuke met in a pitched battle, during which much was revealed of the Uchiha clan's history, and in which Itachi attempted to take Sasuke's eyes.

It was all a ruse. Itachi had planned it all, down to the word. He needed to keep Sasuke and Madara from meeting, or barring that, Madara from fully being able to use Sasuke. He implanted Amaterasu in Sasuke's eye, awakening the Mangekyou in his brother, and with that last act, died. His body was recovered by Zetsu and Madara after the battle.

Strengths/Abilities:
Being a shinobi, Itachi is strong in hand-to-hand and melee weapons combat. Though his powers will be dampened to unusability on the island, Itachi's skill with ninjutsu and genjutsu is formidable and mostly helped along by his command of the Uchiha family's birthright. The Sharingan grants the user the ability to see through and cast illusions at will, and project an opponent's next moves before they make them, and Itachi was a master of the doujutsu associated with the Sharingan in all its forms. The true power of it lay in his awakening of the Mangekyou however, which granted him the ability to use three very powerful techinques: Amaterasu, which engulfs its target (and eventually everything around it) in black flames; Tsukuyomi, which draws the targeted individual into a world where Itachi controls time, space, and the mass of objects, and the torment of three days' torture is compressed into a single second in the real world; and Susanoo, the storm god, with its awesome and terrible power and ability to render the summoner almost invincible. In addition to these things, he has an excellent command of most jutsus. His full repertoire isn't known, but it's reasonable to assume that he knows most of what is not considered forbidden. His forte, as with all Uchiha, are those jutsus that call forth fire.

All chakra-based abilities aside, he is an excellent fighter and tactician, as expected of someone who rose quickly in the ranks of a martial society. He is a quick learner, able to make snap decisions that are the most beneficial, or barring that, the least likely to get himself and those under his command killed.

Weaknesses/Faults:
Using the Mangekyou for so long has drained his body, and he has trouble seeing things at distances due to the degeneration of his eyesight. While he may still be formidable against normal humans, he is certainly not as strong as he once was. On occasion he has been known to cough up blood.

Furthermore, Itachi can be perceived as uninterested, which may put people off him. As before, he's somewhat aloof, and when people don't know someone they don't tend to trust them too easily. He's so far ahead of others intellectually that he can come off as an intolerable know-it-all who looks down on others, when this is not usually the case. In tense situations, it becomes easy to blame those who stand apart from the crowd. Hoepfully this will never be the case. He also has a certain fondness for sweet things, which may lead to cavities if he does not remember to brush his teefs after every meal.
